A LARGE KASHMIRI GILT, POLYCHROME-PAINTED AND LACQUERED PAPIER-MÂCHÉ QUR'AN HOLDER
Kashmir, Northern India, mid to late 19th century
Of wide rectangular shape, opening into a typical X-like form, the body painted in polychromes and gold, each side decorated with large rectangular panels in-filled with traditional Kashmiri decorative motifs, including large boteh (paisley) leaves, cusped arabesques, stylised split palmettes, volutes and foliate meanders, each decorative element further enhanced with polychrome-painted flowering scrolls and gilt star-shaped patterns, the edges with blue and white floral bands.

Following the success of our inaugural sale earlier this June, our Islamic and Indian Art department is pleased to present their upcoming auction, Arts of India and the Islamic Lands, which is now live on our website.
